“When Parents Build the School, nobody else pulls the strings; We teach the whole child (the wins and wounds) and protect their identity; We must adapt and plan for continuity.“
-Marva
Marva’s BCSE is a grassroots organization dedicated to providing supplementary education to empower Black children. She views her organization’s work as centred on nurturing and restoring students’ confidence, cultural pride, and academic motivation through Afrocentric, pedagogical practices.
For Marva, such an educational approach is holistic and inclusive addressing academic, social, cultural, and emotional dimensions of Black children’s development. Moreover, this is a collective work where all the community members—parents, infants, adolescents, adults and elders—collaborate to educate the child. For Marva, this work draws on Black people’s historical successes and failures to inform all aspects of children’s growth. While this BCSE’s work has led to success, Marva acknowledges it is at risk of not continuing if the organization does not prioritize succession planning and if it does not adapt to rapidly changing working climates.
