“We women made invisible sacrifices to keep BCSEs running where there were no opportunities for Black kids. Our men were too caught up in status instead of fulfilling their appropriate traditional leadership roles.“

-Maureen

Maureen was an educator who worked with several Black community organizations. Maureen describes a school system that fails to support Black students and describes society as ‘stripped of possibilities for Black children.’ She highlights the perseverance of women who, despite having to work long hours. Participated in BCSEs to ensure that Black children were well taken care of.  Maureen explains that, over time, she consciously distanced herself from BCSEs because she disliked the interpersonal conflicts that occurred within them, often related to power.  At this stage, Maureen feels that she is too tired to continue her involvement in BCSEs.
