“BCSEs help students and their families to navigate the system, while at the same time trying to change the system.”
-Yodi
Yodi has always been committed to supporting Black communities and worked for several BCSEs before becoming a leader in one of them. She reports that the needs and programs have evolved over time to adapt to the needs of those using BCSE services, but also to meet the requirements of the Quebec government and thus ensure the funding essential for the organizations' survival and development. Yodi emphasizes, however, that while homework help is often a genuine need, this necessity stems from other factors. According to Yodi, academic support must, in most cases, be accompanied by psychological support. Furthermore, she reports that the presence of BCSEs within schools could contribute to a better understanding of others: families would gain a better understanding of the system, and school staff would gain a better understanding of their cultures. The presence of BCSEs would promote greater success for Black youth and prevent many staff errors. Yodi advocates working in partnership with Quebec institutions to promote the success of young Black people.
